Why I Decided To Rebrand

Welcome to Short Girl Long Jacket! This is what I’ve been working on, turning Looking Glass into a new blog.

I was proud of what Looking Glass had become and (most of) the content I’d created, which is why I decided to rebrand instead of starting a whole new blog. But there was always one thing that bothered me. The name Looking Glass wasn’t original, unique, or relevant to my blog topic.

Why I Decided To Rebrand

The reason I started blogging was because of my boyfriend. Shortly after he started blogging, he kept on telling me I should make one too. One morning he texted me to come up with a blog name by the end of the day. I mentally brainstormed all day and came up with Looking Glass, because I like Alice in Wonderland.

But there are so many Looking Glasses out there. Google it and you’ll find hair salons, a rock band, and an assortment of societies/groups. Plus there are plenty of fashion blogs with Alice in Wonderland-themed names. I always wanted an original and clever blog name like Man Repeller or Kayture.

Looking Glass was also messy content-wise. In the beginning I didn’t really know what I was doing. I experimented with lifestyle and beauty posts – I had one random hair post. I wanted a petite fashion blog from the start, but there were moments where I strayed off the path. Now I want to focus on what I do best – petite fashion.

Coming Up With Short Girl Long Jacket

This time, instead of just thinking of names I brainstormed on paper. I wrote down a bunch of words that I like/have meaning to me. Everything from my favourite fabrics to my favourite bands. It didn’t take me too long to come up with Short Girl Long Jacket, which I fell in love with. It’s the original, clever, and relevant blog name I always wanted.

It’s a play on two things. Props if you’ve already guessed them. The first and most obvious is from the song Short Skirt Long Jacket by Cake. I’m not even a huge Cake fan, but I’ve always loved the song and the woman described in it. She’s smart, confident, and stylish. When I listen to the song I want to be her, like that episode of Broad City when Ilana meets the Deals Deals Deals investor. Here are some lyrics:

With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass
She is fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facilities and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long, long jacket

The other thing it plays on is what I believe to be the most important rule for petite styling, and that is creating vertical lines (that elongate your body). This can be done with stripes, high waisted bottoms, or long jackets. It also sort of represents my style because I love slightly oversize clothes.

So that’s it! Thanks for reading and following me to the new blog. I hope you like it as much as I do, let me know what you think in the comments. I’ll leave you with the song that inspired the name.

I love the new name! It’s very creative and it perfectly fits with your style and the topics you’re writing about:)

Moreover I can totally understand your decision to rebrand. I’ve been thinking about the same thing for the last weeks, too. Still I couldn’t come up with a good name so far – in case you want to help me, please to! I would love to hear your ideas:D

Can’t wait to read more over here!

      Thanks so much Seline!

It really helped me to brainstorm on paper. Make a list of everything you like that and is relevant to your blog topic, then you can combine and play around with words until something clicks 🙂

I am giving you a standing ovation right now, Maria. WOOHOOOOOOOO!!! THIS REBRANDING IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Your confidence and personality really shone through in this post, and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us. I am a petite little cupcake at 5 feet, so I’m so happy that you are focusing on what you love and are confident in, and something that is so needed in a fashion world full of giant twigs. I loved this post, and thanks for introducing me to cake as well– never heard of them before this!

I like your new blog name. I thought about having fancy name when I re started my blog and at the end , I think it is very important to make it clear and straight forward about what you try to deliver through your blog. It is a digital world nowadays, (sadly but it’s true that) nobody has all day long to understand your meaning of the meaning of the meaning. A name delivers the content is the best!

    1. Maria 10/03/2017 at 18:00

Thank you! Yeah, that’s true. I think that was holding me back with my old blog because the name was unclear. I guess this new name is fancy but I think it’s clear too, so the best of both worlds.

    1. Maria 13/03/2017 at 18:07

Thank you Christina! That was the goal 😀

Congratulations on rebranding, Maria! I think it’s a brilliant decision to solidify who you want to be before you move on any further. I also like the fact that you explained exactly what happened and your name brainstorming process. I’m sure a lot of people would find it helpful in their own blogging journey. 🙂
