My LA photos are ready! This was my shortest vacation ever, but it’s the one where I took the most photos. I guess that’s what happens when your travel partner/boyfriend is always up for taking photos. He wanted to take more than I did! I’m splitting up the trip into parts so it’s not too overwhelming. Starting with day 1, my Venice Beach & Santa Monica travel diary.
We started our trip at the beach because we’re both beach bums. Also Venice Beach is pretty close to the airport (closer than LA itself, at least). I mentioned in my vlog that LA is super spread out. It’s a trip you have to plan out. You can’t just stay wherever and go wandering, because you could end up walking in between houses for hours.
I’m going to do it true diary style and break it down hourly, to the best of my memory). I enjoy reading those posts so I thought it would be fun to do one too.
11:00 am: Arrive at airport. Order a Lyft to Venice Beach. Our ride arrives within minutes! We are amazed because we don’t have ride share apps in Vancouver, and taxis take forever to order and are way more expensive. We also got a $50 credit as first time users, which we spread out for the whole trip. I don’t think we paid more than $10 for a ride! I was told that you need to rent a car in LA since the transit system is bad, but we were fine using Lyft and walking as much as we could.
11:30 am: Arrive at Venice Beach pier. Walk down it and admire the golden sand, light blue water, and ridiculously tall palm trees.
11:45 am: Walk back to shore and change into more appropriate beach clothes (a sundress for me, shorts for my boyfriend). Start our journey to Santa Monica along the boardwalk, where our accommodation for the night was booked.
12:30 pm: Stop by muscle beach to creep on guys. JK, it was just to take the tourist shot.
1:oo pm: Visit the famous Venice Beach sign and take obligatory photo.
1:15 pm: Ice cream break! Had to tie my hair up because it was flying everywhere.
2:00 pm: Admire the local artwork. We also popped in a few shops along the way.
3pm: Beach break! We decided it was time to take a dip in the water, and we were a bit tired of walking with all our stuff. It was colder than I thought it would be, but I could stand in the water without feeling like my toes were going to fall off (like they do in Vancouver) so I enjoyed it. Didn’t swim but let the waves crash around me for way too long.
4:30 pm: Leave the boardwalk and head into the city to find our motel. We wanted to finally drop our bags off and freshen up. And yes, we stayed in a motel. All the hotels we could find were about $500 a night for a room (even airbnb’s were around $300) and we wanted this to be a reasonably affordable little getaway. LA is the cheapest beach destination you can fly to from Vancouver. Food and accommodation were probably more expensive than the tickets though.
5:00 pm: Arrive at motel. It’s actually not bad! Not a 5 star hotel, of course, but it was clean. We just needed a decent place to sleep so we weren’t too picky (it was called Palm Motel, in case you’re curious). Dropped our bags off, showered quickly and headed out to eat. Found a Mexican place pretty quickly and ordered giant margaritas and burritos.
6:00 pm: Go back to the motel for our jackets because it got surprisingly cold. Our maybe our margaritas had too much ice.
6:30 pm: Arrive at Santa Monica pier and take photos because it’s golden hour and the beach and sunset look amazing.
7 pm: Go to the amusement park on the pier because I’d been wanting to ride the roller coaster all day. Even though it wasn’t big, it was so fun riding right beside the ocean. We also rode the ferris wheel, because what’s more cheesily romantic than a ferris wheel ride?
8:30 pm: Head to downtown Santa Monica on a street that was illuminated by hanging lights. Basically went there because it looked pretty. Discovered that downtown Santa Monica is like a big outdoor mall. Watched a street performer, checked out some shops. Found the most amazing sneakers ever at the Skechers store – ones with memory foam soles. Both got a pair since there was a buy one, get on 50% sale. Then wondered where said sneakers had been all our lives – they seriously feel like walking on a cloud. Wondered why not all shoes have memory foam soles.
10:00 pm: Head home because we’re starting to feel tired (we had a very early flight – unfortunately we couldn’t find a direct one). Also we had to wake up semi-early the next morning to go to the LACMA museum. Chill for a bit and then pass out.
Venice Beach and Santa Monica were our favourite part of the trip. I’m always drawn to the water/a good beach. If I lived in LA, it would definitely be there. Have you ever been to Venice Beach or Santa Monica?
