You know those pleated midi skirts everyone loves? I cut mine in half. I just wasn’t feeling it as a midi. Long, flowy skirts are romantic and all, but I’ve always preferred minis. No excess fabric means legs that look longer, get more sun, and have freer movement. Plus, being petite means minis are easier to pull off without looking inappropriate. Wins all around.
I thought I would like this outfit with a midi skirt and ankle boots, but it felt way more me with my Strokes tee & gold pleated mini. The studded flats felt more interesting than boots. I’ve loved The Strokes since their first album came out so wearing their t-shirt makes me happy.
Since we’re talking music, I thought it would be fun to give you a look into my Spotify. I was inspired by Batsheva of Cynical Duchess, who recently did a post where she put her music on shuffle and shared 10 songs. So here’s a sample of what I listen to (apart from the Strokes & Arctic Monkeys, though they’ll both probably pop up on the list).
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero
I’ve also been listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for ages, since Maps came out. Their sound has changed quite a bit over the years but I still love them.
- Arctic Monkeys – From The Ritz To The Rubble
Told you they would be here. The Strokes, surprisingly, aren’t. Arctic Monkeys my favourite band, I love all of their songs. They aren’t afraid to experiment with different sounds yet you can always tell it’s an Arctic Monkeys song, and the lyrics! The guitars! Ok I’ll stop.
- St. Vincent – Pieta
I’ll be honest – I only found out about St. Vincent because she’s Cara Delevingne’s ex. I was curious to hear her music and ended up really loving it. Her sound is one of a kind.
- FKA Twigs – Hide
This might seem out place as I don’t really listen to similar music, but her genre is hard to define. I like how she puts together experimental sounds and makes them sound really good.
- The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine
Another classic band I’ve been listening to forever. I find it amazing that it was just Jack on the guitar/piano and Meg on the drums. You’d think it was a band of at least 4 people.
- Lana Del Rey – West Coast
I have mixed feelings about Lana Del Rey. I think she has a beautiful voice and her music is dreamy – I love the classic rock vibes of her later albums. I don’t always agree with her lyrics, but sometimes they hit me right in the feels.
- Kasabian – West Ryder Silver Bullet
These guys have a really interesting sound. It’s a cool mixture of rock and electro. Sometimes their lyrics are dark, but they have songs I could listen to on repeat for hours.
- Amy Winehouse – Cupid
I don’t really listen to soul/jazz, but Amy Winehouse had an amazing voice and her lyrics were always so honest.
- Franz Ferdinand – Stand On The Horizon
Yet another group I’ve been listening to for years and years. It takes me a long time to get sick of music ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I’m going to see these guys live soon and am beyond excited, their music just makes me want to dance.
- Jimi Hendrix – Gypsy Eyes
I love listening to classic rock like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and The Doors. You can just tell how into the music they were – they’d get lost in those guitar solos (some last for minutes). I wish I could travel back in time to see someone iconic play. I haven’t met a lot of people my age that are into classic rock but I think 70s music is just as good as 70s fashion.
Most of my friends are into EDM/hip hop so I listen to that when we hang out, and I’ve been to my fair share of EDM shows. But when I’m on my own I always go back to what I love the best – messy guitar riffs and clever lyrics.
PS – yes, I am wearing socks under my tights. I was changing outfits in Jon’s car, and it was really cold on the day of the shoot so I decided to leave my socks on for extra warmth. After I put my tights on that I realized I was wearing open shoes that showed off the socks (oops), but I honestly didn’t mind how it looked. Who knows, maybe it will become a thing.
