Stripes For Any Season

It always surprises me when I hear stripes called a trend. I think they left the trendzone (pun very much intended) a long time ago. They’ve pretty much stayed stylish since Chanel made the Breton look popular in 1917. It’s a universal print that always looks good.

Today I’m teaming up with Amrita of Calmcchori to show how to wear stripes for any season. I’m sharing the fall/winter look from Canada, and Amrita is sharing the spring/summer look from her homeland of India. She now lives in Portland – check out her blog for all her travels. This girl has been places. Though Amrita’s shots do make me a bit jealous (it’s still pretty cold here), this one was one of my favourite winter outfits yet.

It was warm enough on the day of the shoot that I could get away with wearing just my bomber and my boyfriend’s sweater. When I bought it for him I knew I’d be borrowing it to wear with my over the knee boots. I love the contrast of sporty with the most feminine types of boots. A few years ago I never would have thought of wearing a bomber or a hoodie with OTK boots but now everything goes.

Stripes have also come a long way. Before writing this post I did a bit of research on stripes for accuracy. Up until the 20th century when Coco Chanel revived them, stripes had a bad reputation. In the middle ages they were thought to be demeaning and demonic, and were only worn by social outcasts. Then there was the whole prison uniform era. Now they’re worn all over the globe at any time of year by both genders.

I know it might sound stupid, but little things like that make me happy. To see how much people and their mentalities have evolved. If something as seemingly trivial as wearing stripes was a bad thing up until only a few centuries ago, just think of what will seem trivial a few centuries from now.

Thanks for reading and check out Amrita’s post here. How do you wear stripes?

I used to ADORE wearing stripes all the time when I was younger. Then as time went on the striped shirts slipped out of me repertoire for some odd reason. A few days ago my husband gifted me an Alexander Wang striped top with holes all over and I’ve literally been thinking about how I would wear it in the warmer weather. I think I’ll be rocking it with a short skirt or some black cutoff shorts.

I love how you rock it with your skirt and those awesome boots!!

That sounds like a cute outfit! Sometimes I go through phases with clothes too, I have this one cardigan that I used to wear almost daily but I haven’t worn it all winter. Maybe in a few years the obsession will come back.

Yay!!! I love collabs! That is actually very interesting that stripes were considered demonic back in the middle ages. Its actually astounding some of the things they believed back then– which makes me scared about what future generations will laugh about us. I wonder what we are doing that will be so ridiculous to people in the year 3000. I really like your outfit btw– especially your tattoos peeking out of your shorts and through your sheer tights– gives the whole thing a bit of edge. I also really like that window photography. Amrita’s style looks so sunny and lovely, and I’m so happy that you are featuring on each other’s blogs. I love collabs! I think I said that already. Whatever.

Right? Sometimes I watch period pieces or read old books and some of the things that used to be normal really blow my mind. Thank you! It was a Starbucks window lol, but I love how those shots turned out. And glad you liked the collab 馃檪
