Confession: this is a total copycat outfit.
Last year I saw a girl on the street who I thought looked so cool. She wore black velvet leggings, ankle boots, leather jacket and chiffon blouse flowing out from underneath it. Even my boyfriend said her outfit looked like something I would wear. I think it’s what really triggered my velvet craze. Her leggings looked so fresh after years of leather leggings. Not that I stopped loving leather leggings, it’s just nice to switch it up.
Sadly, I couldn’t find any until the velvet boom of this season. It was frustrating, especially since I kept on seeing Rumi Neely wearing her gorgeous velvet slip dresses on instagram during the spring. Then this pair was practically thrown in my face and I could finally recreate that perfect outfit. And I don’t feel bad about it.
After all, isn’t fashion one big copycat cycle? And what is street style but a huge source of inspiration? They do say that imitation is the best form of flattery. I mean, as long as you put your own spin on it. I remember the mystery girl wearing a solid black blouse, but I chose my hash print one. She was also wearing leather ankle boots and I chose my shiny textured ones. Even though I wear a lot of black, I don’t often wear it solid from head to toe. I like to add in prints and textures.
I think that’s the key – finding your own signature flair to add to every outfit. Maybe you always wear a certain colour or accessory/piece of jewelry. Like a movie remake or a song cover, the new version always has a different feel. And if you pull it off right, it can turn out pretty good.
Thanks for reading! Have you ever copied someone else’s outfit?
