You read that right. How to buy jeans online. It sounds crazy – even though online shopping is getting more and more popular most people still wouldn’t consider getting jeans without physically seeing them first. It’s hard enough to find jeans that fit in brick & mortar stores, especially for us shorties, but I’ve discovered it is possible to find jeans that fit well online!
At first I was skeptical. I’m very brand loyal when it comes to jeans but after doing some research I decided to take the plunge with Mott & Bow. They’re a brand out of New York that are committed to making premium jeans at a reasonable price.
So, how did I successfully find a pair of jeans that fit perfectly online? Here are my golden rules of online shopping:
READ THE REVIEWS
This is the most important thing when it comes to online shopping. Read as many reviews as you can. If you have time, read them all. The product’s copy will always glorify it but real people will give you a much better idea of what the product is like. And after you receive the product, leave a detailed review too! It doesn’t take too long and will be super helpful for the next shopper. If you feel comfortable with leaving your height/weight/measurements, do it.
Mott & Bow’s website was full of positive reviews, and that was what convinced me to try them. Everyone was right about the great fabric. It’s simultaneously soft, firm, and stretchy. It’s a little thick so not ideal for summer, but as the sun was going down and the temperature was dropping I was glad to be wearing them.
Most people said they fit a little big so I ordered a size down (24). I found that the fit was true to size and I actually wish I had ordered my usual size (25). The 24 does fit but let’s just say I wouldn’t wear them to a large meal.
Now that you’ve done your research, it’s time to get technical. Measure and compare yourself to the product specs. This will help you decide your size, along with what the reviewers are saying. Every brand is different so it’s important to check their sizing specs. For denim you should also know your inseam; that will determine what leg length you need. It may seem obvious but I’ve met a surprising amount of people that don’t know about inseams and buy jeans that are too long/consequently unflattering. Sometimes you don’t think about it. I didn’t until I learned what an inseam was and actually found jeans that were the right length.
Another big factor in getting these jeans was that they come in a 28″ inseam. Not a lot of brands carry that length, at least that I know of. From my experience most brands seem to think the average woman is model height. They must be only getting data from Scandinavian countries. Anyway, as you can see the 28″ length jeans are perfect on me and end at my ankles. They’re also a nice, high rise. It justified getting another pair of dark jeans because my other black jeans are only mid-rise. Oh, and technically these are dark grey.
And that’s it! Basically, learn as much about the product as you can. It’s like studying for a test. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll do. Of course there’s always a risk when buying clothes online but if you do it right, you should be fine.
How do you feel about online shopping? Would you buy jeans online?
