So fishnets are now socially acceptable. Or maybe just fashionably acceptable. In any case, they’re being layered under everything these days. If you haven’t noticed, here I am wearing fishnets & ripped jeans.
I’ve been layering tights under jeans since I moved to Canada when I was 8. There are certain habits you learn growing up in a Russian home. Seriously layering up in the cold is one of them. My mom wouldn’t let me leave the house if I wasn’t dressed warm enough. My boyfriend now carries on the tradition because he knows how easily I get cold.
In college I used to wear coloured tights under my ripped jeans, but for some reason I stopped. I guess our past few winters have been mild enough that I didn’t need extra layers. We did have a few cold snaps but they were too cold for ripped jeans.
Now that the look is officially in fashion, I decided to give it another try with fishnets. And I like the result. Layering makes them as down to earth as notoriously sexy tights can be. I also think wearing them grunge-style with an oversize metallic sweater, velvet combat boots, beanie, and shearling jacket helped.
Probably not what my mom would have in mind for a warm winter outfit, but I swear the fishnets are suprisingly warm. Especially since they’re made up of hundreds of tiny holes. These photos were taken on a day when the temperature was around freezing and I was actually ok (seriously mom!).
Moral of the story: don’t ever stop doing your own unique styling tricks. One day they’ll be in fashion and you’ll look like a pioneer. Also don’t be afraid of wearing things that you think are too sexy – there’s always a way to dress them down. Thanks for reading! What do you think of fishnets?
