Have you ever had a type of clothing that you used to wear all the time but then stopped?
For me it’s the band tee. When I first started going to concerts I always bought them. Today a lot of people seem to wear band tees for the logo or the vintage look. Or Metallica has more fans than I thought. I get that, but when I dived back into the world of band tees I only wanted to wear ones of bands I love. So I chose an Arctic Monkeys tee, because they’re my favourite band.
You may be wondering why I stopped wearing band tees in the first place. It’s not a crazy trend that only sticks around for a season. Well, I went through some musical phases as a teen trying to fit in with everyone else. My sister once told me when I was young that you’ll always go back to the music you originally loved, and she was right.
Ok, so my first musical loves were the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys, but when I grew up a bit more I started getting into alternative/garage rock. Mostly because of my sister. I remember dancing around to the Strokes on Saturday Night Live in our living room together, and her blasting the White Stripes from her room every day after school.
Then high school/college and the EDM craze happened, so in an effort to be more like everyone else I started listening to the music that everyone else did. I didn’t want to be the weird girl who likes rock when everyone else is going crazy over the latest DJ. I tried to get into it, I really did, but when I’d hear my old songs in my playlist it made me miss them a lot. So eventually I went back to my roots and started listening to all my old favourite bands (and discovered some new ones).
I don’t think EDM is bad. I genuinely enjoy dancing to it at clubs and parties. There’s just something about rock that I love so much. I believe that music is a very personal thing and there’s no right or wrong or good or bad. Can you explain why you love the music that you do? I mean, I can tell you what I like about my music – the guitar riffs, the lyrics – but there’s no true logical answer to why I like the bands I do. When I hear them something inside me clicks and I get really into it.
It’s just like fashion. There are so many different kinds of style out there – feminine, quirky, edgy, casual – and you don’t have to like them or wear them all, but you can appreciate them. Just because you don’t like a certain genre, that doesn’t mean the artists aren’t talented. So who cares if you don’t like mainstream music? Diversity is what makes this world interesting, and it would be so boring if we only listened to one kind of music.
